Lactose free greek yogurt

People who are lactose intolerant may quiver at the thought of having greek yogurt. But there’s a solution for everything in today’s society. And for people who are lactose intolerant and want to have some delicious greek yogurt it’s no different: lactose free greek yogurt! First, let’s talk about the amount of lactose in greek yogurt. Then, let’s look into some lactose free greek yogurt brands and find out which one suits you best!

Does greek yogurt have lactose?

Yes. Just like all natural dairy products, greek yogurt contains lactose. But because GY has been strained three times to remove the whey, much of the lactose is also removed. So how much lactose is in greek yogurt approximately? Nonfat plain GY contains less than 4 grams of lactose per 6-ounce serving. This is more than half of what regular nonfat yogurt contains, which is about 14 grams per 6 ounces. In comparison, milk contains about 11 grams of lactose per cup. This qualifies greek yogurt as a low lactose dairy product. Besides that, the live active cultures (probiotics) inside greek yogurt will help digest the lactose for you. Lastly, studies have shown that probiotics can lessen the symptoms of lactose intolerance. This is because they modify the metabolic activity of microbiota in the colon. So, is greek yogurt lactose free? No, but it’s perfect if you’re lactose intolerant and want to start introducing lactose into your diet!

Lactose free greek yogurt brands

Unless you’re avoiding milk as a whole in your diet, dairy free and lactose free greek yogurt is perfect for you. What’s the difference? What it comes down to is that dairy refers to milk and any part of milk that comes from mammals, such as cows. To be dairy free, a product must contain no milk. Lactose on the other hand, is an ingredient of milk. That means that products that are dairy free are also lactose free, but products that are lactose free are not necessarily dairy free.
